Plotting Race

Abstract


This Thinking Space essay argues for the significant contribution literary geography can and should make to the field of critical race studies. By bringing insights about the geographic nature of racial formation into conversation with narratology, a practice of 'plotting race' interrogates the relationship between race, space, and storytelling. After exploring the productive valences of the term 'plot,' I demonstrate the range of critical methods that fit under the umbrella of 'plotting race,' and I offer a brief close reading of texts that emphasize the importance of taking narrative perspective into account when tracing the production of racial geographies.
